‘Good’ Friday

There is something I was thinking about when I was praying on why we call today Good Friday. I know today is called Good Friday because Christ died for my sins, He was the lamb of God who took away the sins of the world and His death and resurrection has meaning for me today. His death and resurrection means He gave me the opportunity to not die, but to live in eternal life in the world to come.

Yet, despite that, when I pray on what Good Friday was for the disciples, it seems like it was anything but good. The disciples had spent years following and learning from Christ and believed Him to be the Messiah, and yet on Good Friday the hope they had was crucified on the cross.

The crucifixion was such a brutal death that only the disciple John was at the foot of the cross; the others had all gone away. The scene must have been beyond my imagination to think about what Jesus went through, the pain He suffered for us. Knowing Christ was crucified must have felt anything but ‘good’.

Yet today we refer to this day as ‘Good’ Friday and we know this to be true not because of today, but because of Easter Sunday. Without Easter Sunday, Good Friday is anything but good. We know that the story did not end on Good Friday. That day must have felt so dark, so sorrowful, so painful, but those sorrows and pains were transformed on Easter Sunday with the resurrection.

We all go through our own ‘Good’ Friday’s; times in our life that feel so sad, so painful, so dark, yet we remember that today is Good Friday because of Easter Sunday. Easter Sunday is coming; it will be here and the darkness of death will not last. When we experience our own Good Friday remember why Christ suffered for us and remember that Easter Sunday is just around the corner.

Sincerely,

Your Brother in Christ
