Following Christ can seem so simple in theory: follow the commandments, the path Christ walked, the narrow path. Yet in reality I am finding it easy at times and incredibly difficult at other times in my life.
Sometimes I read Scripture and I think it seem so easy to follow Christ. He tells Matthew to ‘follow me’ (Mt 9:9) and I can think about how easily it was for Matthew to stop what he was doing to follow Christ, but that is not the full picture.
I can think back and imagine how easy it must have been to follow Christ, to leave everything and to follow him but I know that is not the case. Following Christ was not easy for the disciples and it can be challenging for us today.
There are times I know what Christ is calling me to do and yet fear holds me back. The fear to disappoint Him. The fear to fall short. The fear that I will not be enough.
Fear can hold us back. Fear could have stopped Matthew from leaving his role as a tax collector, but it did not, nor should it hold us back. When fear rears its head, we must have faith.
Faith to follow Christ even though we may not know what the future holds. Faith to follow when we do not know what the next step will be. Faith to be the saint Christ calls us to be.
Following Christ requires us to place our trust in Him, even when fear is trying to hold us back. To follow Him not just when we can see all the blessings, but when life gets difficult. In those moments, I pray for Christ to lead the way when I cannot see the narrow path, and I pray that He may guide me and that I will have the faith to take one step at a time and follow Him.
Sincerely,
Your Brother in Christ
